Internet Security

Always use a different password for each web site and on-line account. Make sure all passwords incorporate both letters and numbers. Never keep a list of your passwords in an obvious place, and if you are using "Windows", don't let it save your passwords.
Look for the closed padlock image that appears at the bottom of your web browser when you log onto a web site. This means that the site has been certified as secure.
Purchase and use a good anti-virus software. Remember to update the virus definitions at least once a week. Purchase and use a good firewall program, especially if you have high speed access.

Set your anti-virus software to scan not only the files on your computer but your incoming and outgoing email. Don't open attachments, even from friends unless you are expecting an attachment. Your anti-virus software should be set to automatically scan all attachments and quarentine any suspected files.
Most good internet security suites that include anti-virus and firewalls will also include anti-spam software. Using a good anti-spam software will help reduce the chances of a virus getting to your computer.

The Death Of Newsletters?

Okay, perhaps that was a little strong…

But if newsletter owners don’t take some serious steps now, they will be facing the death of their newsletter. Frankly,it’s already happening.

Why?

There are a variety of reasons for this… and we’ll discuss the two worst reasons.

Reason #1: Not real newsletters.

With the ‘gurus’ touting the splash pages, and various gimmicks to get people to sign up to their “announcement list”, practically everyone and their brother has their own “newsletter.”

The problem is, these aren’t real newsletters. They are simply “hype” for the owner to pitch everyone else’s new releases.

Is that wrong? No. But people should be aware of that’s what they’re going to get. Unfortunately, they believe that they’re going to get real tips, articles, etc. and that’s what they should get.

Years ago, in 1997 when I started my first newsletter (before most people had even considered doing it), I included one or two good articles, then of course, ads. Those ads however, were usually subscriber ads – if a person subscribed, they got a free ad.

Eventually it became far too many ads, and we had to cut that back. We then simply did paid ads, and the occasional “solo” ad.

This is the issue with most of the “guru” newsletters today – they are in fact, repeat solo mailings – usually something they earn a commission on.

Okay – we’re all here to make money. But why not plug in some actual tips for people? There are only a few that are still doing this, and those are the newsletters I make sure I read. Those who repeatedly JUST send pitches in every “issue” (usually 2-5 times a week), nine times out of ten, get the delete button without even being opened.

I admit even I’ve fallen into some of these mistakes, and sent more pitch emails than real newsletters to my subscribers. But I’ve realized it, and have corrected that. You can too.

Reason #2: Spam Filters.

If you use Outlook or similar type of email client software, you already know that most of them have a “junk” folder – the software pre-determines if it “thinks” the message coming in is spam, and puts the email in that folder.

Often times, it’s happening server side, without the person knowing it.

Why is it getting the spam filters?

Well, this usually goes along with issue #1 – usually the newsletter contains pitch after pitch, and does not contain actual articles. I’ve been watching for a while, and have scanned what seems to “make” an email go into the junk folder.

Surprisingly (or maybe not-so-surprisingly), the majority of the “guru” newsletters go into my dump folder! The reason is, they use a lot of flagged words. Using the word Free instead like F~ree is actually a higher flag to the spam filters now, than using the word itself.

Some of them also make their pitches so long with the marketing words, it triggers the spam filters.

For the past two years, most entrepreneurs are complaining about poor open rates, and poor sales and click thru rates from their ezine ads. If these two things aren’t corrected, it will continue to decline.

So how do you fix it?

Simple.

1. Run a newsletter that actually contains articles.

2. Consider putting your newsletter online – to avoid the spam filters from catching it, and simply notify your subscribers that a new issue is posted. (Of course, give them perhaps a brief content list so they want to click thru to it now).

Your subscribers will be happier, and will become more loyal to your newsletter AND recommendations when you make them, because you aren’t always pitching them.
